Top gun

Tom Cruise is the Top Gun in Scientology. In the movie, Top Gun, Tom Cruise’s name is Maverick and he is a fighter pilot. Top Gun is a jet school for training fighter pilots. Now all the pilots are competing for the Top Gun Award. In the movie Cruise finishes a distant second due to a jet stream that put his aircraft in a fast spin and upon ejecting from the aircraft, his best friend, Goose, was killed. So another fighter pilot, named Iceman, wins the top fighter pilot award.

As a naval aviator, they must believe in their ability and skills. Cruise played the part of one that pushes it to the limit. Cruise also starred in the movie, Days of Thunder. In this movie he plays the role of a race car driver named Cole, and again he pushes it to the limit. He is an exciting actor and maybe some of his best performances are things he relates to.

I would say that Scientology would enhance living on the edge. In the way they view death, it is endlessly repeatable through reincarnation, so it is almost inconsequential. Now biblically, death is a one time event and you either go to heaven or hell. We have one lifetime to make peace with God, as it is written in Hebrews 9:27 “And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment.” Also read these scriptures Matthew 25:46 and Revelation 20:10-15.

Cruise’s performance is seen again in the movie, Risky Business. Here Cruise is trying to get into a good college. His school project is aiding a woman of the night in her profession, which was risky since his parents are out of town. What about the movie Rain Man? This is a movie about a mentally challenged brother, played by Dustin Hoffman, who can count cards. Scientology wants to improve the world both materially and spiritually. They deny man has fallen; they believe in the concept of the Thetans. The concept is taken from its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, and his psychological theories of Dianetics. They use Buddhist and Hindu religious philosophies and believe Thetans are immoral spirits who are deceived by their universe. Scientology claims to be able to free the Thetan and help him or her realize his or her true nature. They claim to be able, through certain controversial procedures, to allegedly heal the mind and free the spirit. This is, at most, a gamble with one’s faith. The gamble is seen in its teachings in that they do not line up with the beliefs of the Christian faith. Cruise is not the only edge-living gambler. He is joined with folks from the ranks such as Saturday Night Fever’s, John Travolta, and Cheers’, Kirstie Alley, and I’ve Got You Babe’s, Sony Bono. These are the risk takers.

I like Cruise’s performance in the movie, The Firm. This is the movie where he finds himself in trouble with the mob. He finds a loophole for the Feds and makes a safe passage from the firm back to being a lawyer. The loophole that Scientology finds is man is not fallen; he is basically good. Man’s problem is he is ignorant of his own perfection. His only fall was into “matter,” not “sin.” This happened trillions of years ago when the Thetans were bored and they amused themselves with emanated mental universes to play in. In Scientology, the concept of Thetan is similar to the concept of spirit or soul found in other belief systems. The term is derived from the Greek letter Theta, which in Scientology represents "the source of life, or life itself." (This is mission impossible for my little brain.) They then became conditioned by the manifestations of their own thought process and they lost awareness of who they were. They lost true identity and spiritual nature.

Get this picture of Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise in a scene from the movie, A Few Good Men. Cruise is questioning Nicholson in a court room and Cruise says, “I want the truth.” Nicholson replies, “You can’t handle the truth.” The truth as written in John 14: 6, “Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” Jesus sticks closer than a brother.

Folks, let’s live life for all we can be with Jesus as our Lord and Savior. A Thetan finding freedom is just a loophole and a road that leads to separation from God. The truth will set you free, as written in, John 8:32, “and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

Let’s not be deceived by Hollywood. I would love to hear your comments on Hollywood and its greatest actors’/actresses’ influences on our lives.
